The mission of the Hydro-Economic  Department is to be the Global Educational and Scientific Engineering Center for Education and Science, which will formulate the University’s creative field, prepare researchers and specialists, successful members of the community who can decide the most important scientific and engineering-technical tasks. The aim of the Department is to be among the leading international universities. To actively develop and develop different levels of specialist and scientific personnel, to ensure continuity and integration of science development with the world education scientific community. Prepare high-level engineering and scientific personnel for the international requirements in the direction of hydro-technical construction; The professional level should ensure their high competitiveness as a local and international labor market.

Graduates should be the leading engineering force in designing hydro technological objects in our country as well as in engineering research and solutions in their exploitation.

The main objectives of the hydroelectric department are:

  • Develop and implement new educational programs and forms of teaching aimed at training, improving and modernizing staff;
  • To develop scientific-pedagogical potential, which actively improves and deepens fundamental and utilized research;
  • develop and deepen the long-term relationship between higher education institutions and its strategic partners both within the country and abroad;
  • Prepare for:
  • Bachelor and professional specialists who are oriented in practical engineering as well;
  • Magistrates and Doctors – oriented on scientific research activities.

In the work of the study there is great attention to engaging in the engineering problems of the hydro engineering facilities in our country. Engineering issues are developed in the form of topics and are discussed at student scientific conferences. The scientific work is presented in the following main directions:

  • Stability and sustainability of hydraulic structures (dams, pressure and uninterrupted tunnels, underground structures) in static and seismic impacts of operational load;
  • Non-statistical pressure and free-flow filtration systems in the bases and their bases;
  • Non-temperate temperature processes and thermal voltages in concrete dams;
  • Rooting processes;
  • HPP operation modes and their energy-efficient efficiency;
  • Wave processes and marine facilities.

Doctoral and Master’s works mainly reflect the modern engineering problems of hydraulics research, including the construction and operation of our country, including hydraulic objects. 6 Dissertation works have been defended within the last 5 years.

There are currently 6 doctoral studies. 3 Dissertation work is in the end of the study. these are:

  • Optimization of the underground structures with consideration of geological factors;
  • Feasibility study of rehabilitation of hydraulic structures;
  • Seismic resistance of towers-type water intake structures.

Engineering research is based on modern numerical methods of research. The calculation of statistics and seismic tasks is based on solutions using finite and border elements

Studies use classical solutions as well as numerical methods, taking into account the voltage caused by non-filter filters and temperature regimes.

The number of engineering tasks used in calculating modern complex applications – LIRA, ANSYS and others.

With the participation of the Department employees:

  • Analysis of the results of low-damp dams and tunnels as well as assessing their reliability of Enguri HPP, Zhinvali, Khrami HPP, Sionhesi, Algeti and other as well as high-performance objects;
  • NAMAHAHHAVES Cascade, Nenskra HPP, Mestiachala and other HPPs expertise;

Scientific research using grants

The material base of the Department includes training labs for hydraulics and hydraulic engineering research. For real objects, GT is used as a research science and expert laboratory of the Faculty of Construction.

Presently, the project of the Complex Research Laboratory of Hydraulic Technologies is underway in the territory of Georgia Technical University, which was constructed in 2018. The laboratory is designed for static and seismic surveys, wavelengths and calculation processes, as well as water laboratory studies of hydroelectric structures. The laboratory will be equipped with the latest technologies of research, including the seismic platform.

The graduates of the Department are successfully working in various engineering institutions, including “EnergoPro” LTD, “Georgian Melioration”, LLC “Stuttg” Ltd and others.
